Color

Bright, smoky, or unusual color is often used in creating fantasy eye looks. Since most everyday makeup utilizes neutral or muted colors, using bright or more unique colors can really draw attention to eyes! Brilliant liners and candy-colored shadows can make eyes irresistible and fantastical.

Shine and Shimmer

Stepping out of reality often calls for special effects - and when it comes to eyes, this might mean piling on the shine. Leave the beige matte shadow behind, because fantasy calls for fuchsia glitter. Many eye shadow brands have various effects, such as iridescent, glitter, pearlescent, shimmer, metallic, diamond, marbled, or other finishes.

Bold and Dramatic

Whether it's a celebrity makeup, Cleopatra eye makeup, or an alluring eye for evening, with this style of eye makeup, it's typically going to be dark or dramatic. This means layers of eye shadow, heavy liner, andfalse eyelashes or several coats of volumizing and lengthening mascara to get those attention grabbing eyes. Even men's fantasy cosmetics for eyes may be very bold - even if it's just applying eyeliner, men(think Jack Sparrow!).

Fantasy Eye Styles

Although there are literally thousands of fantasy eye makeup styles, this section touches on a few popular looks.
  • Cat Eyes: A look inspired by the sixties and reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, cat eyes can be an incredible and fun look. The look is created with dramatic liner with a winged application at the outer corner of the eye, and angled eye shadow. For a great tutorial on classic cat eyes, see Amy B's Ask Me Makeup: Turquoise Cat Eyes.
  • Glitter Eye Makeup: Want to feel like a pixie or princess for going out or for your holiday makeup? Glitter eye make offers a dazzling feminine fantasy look. Looks include a thick sweep of colored glitter eye shadow on the lid, a contoured eye with several shades of glitter color, and a more subtle look with iridescent or shimmer shadows. The look is typically accompanied by dark liner on top or both top and lower lid. Visit Splash Cosmetics for a great selection of eye sparkles, colored mascara, and more.
  • Celebrity Eye Makeup: Everyone has a certain fantasy celebrity - the one you'd love to look like, whether it's Marilyn Monroe eyes or Angelina Jolie. Although your favorite celeb might have a makeup artist at her beck and call, you can still copy your eye makeup from studying pictures or celebrity eye makeup tutorials like Lifetime's Get the Look celebrity makeup instructions.
  • Fantasy Character Eye Makeup: LoveToKnow offers a number of character eye makeup articles, whether you need to turn into someone else for Halloween fun or for serious drama in theatrical production. Men can find character and celebrity makeup styles on the web, too, or for those looking for crossing gender lines, select salons offer services to do fantasy eyes and complete transformation makeup.

Eye Makeup Styles

Choosing the right eye makeup styles depends on several factors, including your eye shape, your eye color and skin tone, your personality, and the occasion. Although there is no limit to how creative you can get with eye makeup, understanding the basic styles can help you decide on a specific look.

Types of Eye Makeup Styles

The following styles and eye makeup tips are discussed in general terms, and these can be very different looks depending on the individual. For example, a natural eye for a woman with fair skin and light hair might mean a beige eye shadow and a coat of brownmascara, while a darker-hued woman might achieve a natural look with a stroke of black eyeliner on the upper lid and black mascara.

Natural Eye Makeup

Natural eye makeup is typically characterized by neutral colors that mimic the natural beauty of the eye and is perfect for everyday wear. The goal is to enhance the eyes without looking 'made up' or making it obvious you are wearing eye makeup. The following will help you get a natural look:
  1. Use eye shadow that is in the same color family as your skin tone.
  2. Use eyeliner the same shade or only a shade or two darker than your eyelashes. (Pencil is softer and looks more natural than a liquid liner.)
  3. Use mascara that is close in color to your natural lashes, or opt for a clear mascara.

Professional Eye Makeup

work eye makeup
Pretty, Polished, and Professional
While you can wear a natural style of eye makeup for work, many women like to define the eye a bit more. You can acheive a polished, professional eye makeup style by using neutral eye shadow and liner shades and a regular mascara formula (skip the heavy or dramatic formulas for work). Matte shadow and liner is best for a professional look; shimmer or metallic formulas can look too playful. Perform these steps for a basic professional eye:
  1. Apply a base eye shadow in a shade close to your skin tone.
  2. Add a medium neutral color to your crease and create a slight "v" at the outer corner of the eye to define it.
  3. Sweep a highlight shade just under the browbone and at the inner corner of the eyes.
  4. Use a blending brush to blend the eye shadow well.
  5. Apply a neutral liquid eyeliner on the top lid only, making a clean line that is slightly thicker at the outer corner but does not extend too far past the eye.
  6. Curl lashes and apply two coats of mascara.

Soft and Romantic

Avoid harsh eyeliner and shadow lines for a soft, romantic look (great for date night or weekend wear). Instead, focus on using soft color and defining your gorgeous lashes.
A simple way to get a soft look is to use a single eye shadow color in a pretty pastel or neutral shade. A color with a slight shimmer can look pretty and romantic. Make sure eyeliner is blended well and just used to lightly define the eyes. Try a kohl pencil in a neutral shade or a shade slightly darker than your eye shadow.
The focus of a romantic look is often the lashes. Here's how you can get lush, romantic lashes:
  1. Make sure to curl lashes, 'walking' the curler up and curling from root to tip.
  2. Use an eyelash primer to get longer, fuller lashes and help mascara adhere better.
  3. Use a lengthening mascara on top and bottom lashes.
  4. Avoid over-applying mascara; too much will look overdone rather than romantic.

Dramatic Eye Makeup

Dramatic eye makeup designs are the perfect evening look, for special occasions, or simply when you really want to draw attention to your eyes. Looks in dramatic eye cosmetics range from dark, smoky eye makeup to glitter fantasy styles. Try the following when creating a dramatic eye makeup style:
  • Go bolder with liner than you normally would, and don't be afraid to extend the line a bit beyond the eyes.
  • If you normally only wear liner on the top lid, try lining under the lower lash line or smudging eye shadow under the lower lashes for a softer look.
  • Curl lashes and apply several coats of mascara (combing in between each application to avoid clumps) or try false eyelashes.
  • Experiment with bright colors or those different from your everyday makeup routine.
  • Experiment with various eye makeup finishes, such as metallic liner or shimmer shadow.
  • If you go extremely bold with your eyes, use more subdued and nude tones on cheeks and lipsfor the best effect.

Alternative Eye Makeup

The eyes are typically the focus of scene, punk or emo makeup looks. The style might be very dark, use outrageous design, or use heavy liner or shadow. Styles include combinations of the following:
  • Gray or black shadow applied to the entire eyelid
  • Black shadow blended up towards the browbone
  • Black liner applied to the inner eye
  • Deep colored or lack liner applied along the corner of the eye and along the lower lash line
  • Black liner applied to the top lid
  • Dark, heavy mascara
  • Bold or bright eye shadow color, especially for punk looks
  • Metallic or colored eyeliner or mascara

Vintage and Retro Eye Makeup Looks

Many gorgeous eye makeup looks from the past have come into vogue once again. Popular styles include the following:
  • 1920s: Line both top and bottom of eye lids with thick, black liner. Cover the entire eyelid with a shadow in dark gray, green or turquoise.
  • 1930s: The deep-set eye look was in, so use dark shadow along the crease of the upper eyelid for this effect. Top with blue, green, or violet shadow, medium black liner, and mascara or false eyelashes.
  • 1950s and 60s: Use liquid liner in a thick, bold line across the top lid and two coats of mascara for a simple 50s eye style. Another popular style was the cat eye makeup look with winged liner and a blue, grey, or turquoise shadow.
  • 1970s: Darker eyes were out and lighter eye makeup or bare natural eyes were in. Try light pastel shadows, pale blue, or silvery liner and light mascara for this style.
  • 1980s: Lots of blue eye shadow and colored mascara were staples of the 80s. Goth and punk styles with heavy, exaggerated makeup on the eyes also became popular during this era.
  • 1990s and beyond: The looks of the nineties reflected a focus on the individual that extended to makeup. The overdone looks of the 80s gave way to more subdued looks.

Wear It with Confidence

Whatever eye makeup styles you choose, wear a look you love and wear it with confidence. Don't be afraid to try a new or different look - you may just find the perfect signature style to show off your eyes.

Underwater Photography Lighting Guide

Photography is all about light and understanding how to control it. Underwater photography poses a unique challenge due to simple physics - essentially the properties of water and its effect on light. Water absorbs light in ways that air does not. Therefore, if you are looking to improve your underwater photography, lighting becomes that much more important to understand. In nearly all cases, underwater, ambient light alone will not provide the right light to produce the colorful and pleasing images that you were hoping for.

However, don’t be intimidated, the basics are easy to understand. From there, challenge yourself to study and understand how light works underwater and how to control it. Good photographers study light for their entire careers and are constantly learning from experience and experimentation, constantly improving.
Underwater, light is affected by:
  • Depth
  • Subject distance
  • Weather and surface conditions
The DPG underwater lighting guide is a comprehensive resource for anyone learning about underwater photography, or just trying to hone your skills and tackle specific lighting scenarios. The guide is broken down into several sections. If you are new to underwater photography, you will want to read each section chronologically, otherwise feel free to browse the guide for answers to your specific questions. We will be updating the guide from time to time, so if you are looking for something very specific that is not included currently, please email us and we will definitely add the topic.

10 Fashion Photography Tips by Natalie Johnson

  1. Fashion photography should convey an essence of authority, so your direction of the model(s) needs to be confident and self-assured.  Showing signs of anxiety, stress or lack of direction will invariably be reflected in the performance of your model so make the subject feel comfortable and involved.  Organise a shot list before the shoot and rehearse technique and composition for each shot in your mind. Prepare the location, props and clothes ahead of time and for a truly effective shoot be sure to communicate your agenda, objective and posing directions coherently and calmly.
  2.  Fashion photography is all about clothes and beauty, so pull all the elements of the scene and the model together to reflect this. For example if the shoot focuses on the clothes– use make-up and hair styling to compliment the garment – and vice versa.  If you desire a provocative or seductive look opt for dark, heavy make-up and over styled hair; alternatively for an innocent or natural feel choose subdued pastel tones, gentle make up and soft flowing hair styles.  Unusual looking folk bring interest and personality to the piece, whereas female models with large almond eyes, big lips, small chins and symmetrical faces are deemed “more commercial”.
  3. Posing can be a tricky point to master but browse through the latest men’s and women’s magazines to target a few inspired suggestions as well as getting a grip on what is currently fashionable. Using ‘broken down’ poses or poses that require angular body shapes can add interest and edginess to the piece – as well as help to elongate body length.
  4. A studio is an ideal place to perform a fashion shoot because photographers can easily control lighting and stabilise conditions. If you are shooting in a studio environment remember to meter all areas of the scene to avoid unwanted shadows and the use of a separate light meter rather than the one in your camera, will offer a more accurate reading.
  5. If you can’t afford to hire a professional studio and all the pricey equipment there is a way you can cheat at home. Clear a space in a room that benefits from large windows and peg a white sheet, net or fabric across the window. On a bright sunny day you’ll have yourself a homemade soft box – ideal for flattering even light.
  6. When shooting in low light or into the sun, you may require an extra light source. If all you have is flash then rather than shoot straight on, set it to bounce of a nearby reflector, wall or ceiling. Experiment with angles to create an array of effects and discover what works best for you and the scene you are shooting. Be careful to pay attention to unwanted shadows that may fall across the face and body.
  7.  Props are fantastic for telling a narrative within a fashion shot, but one of the best props to use is a mirror. A mirror can be a used to tell a story and act as an effective tool that allows the photographer to display the front and back of your model. Take a spate reading for the mirror and you may need to bracket your exposures here. Be careful to position yourself, lighting equipment and anything not to do with the shoot out of the reflection.
  8. Location, location, location! Getting the right location is important if you want to convey a narrative within your shot.  For example if the clothing and beauty styling are edgy, hard or provocative you may want to consider an urban setting , alternatively for spring/summer and natural fashions find a rural environment like; a field, meadow, beach, woodland or river bank.
  9. Influence the image by moving around the scene and exploring which angles work best to full expose the garment. This could mean climbing a ladder, crouching low, working a slanted angle or moving closer to the subject. Think about what the message is here and create a composition to reinforce it.
  10.  Fashion photography is achievable alone, but to step it up a gear rope in a friend, family member or photography student as an assistant. Often photographers need an extra pair of hands to position reflectors, angle and reset lighting equipment, tweak the positioning of garments and clear the scene.

How To Capture A Sunset Photo

how to take sunsets
Sunsets are among the favorite subjects of people who love photography, whether amateurs or the veterans. Wherever they go, people just love to watch sunsets while relaxing at the end of the day and when there’s an opportunity, they would not hesitate to capture the sun going down with their reliable digital cameras.
According to the experts, sunsets are not that difficult to photograph. With some simple techniques, any camera owner can achieve beautiful shots regardless of their location.
Planning your shot is very important. Most of the images of sunsets are usually taken at the spur of the moment when one remembers that he or she needs to capture the scene but if you can, why not think ahead. Plan where you’ll be taking your shots and do it a day or two days ahead.
Find out as well the time it’ll happen and the weather on that particular day. In addition, be ready with your equipment from your camera to your lenses, batteries and your tripod if want to ensure stability while capturing the scene.
You have to consider those factors so you can prepare very well. Remember that a sunset takes only half an hour so it’s better to be prepared for it in order to get that beautiful scene you’ve always wanted to take.
The next step is to decide on your composition. If you shoot at different focal lengths, you can create landscape shots or get images focusing on the sun itself. In this case, the lens proves very useful.
You may also want to consider capturing silhouettes in your sunset photos as focal points. This creates a very dramatic effect. For this purpose, you can use anything that’s part of the environment from mountains to trees to sailboats and ships that pass by.

Another good tip for this aspect is to learn to break the rules. While capturing a sunset that’s centered looks great, you can always capture one that’s off centered. You can do this not only for the sun but even for the horizon and your silhouettes as well.
The exposure aspect should also be considered to let you capture the beauty of light during sunset. What you can do is switch your camera into shutter priority mode or aperture mode. This will allow you to take different shots at varying exposures thereby achieving different results and effects for your images.
For best results, you may want to use a tripod. This is particularly important if you have longer shutter speeds and are shooting with longer focal lengths.
Also, keep shooting as the sun goes down. This will give you an opportunity to capture different colors. Again, use different exposures and focal lengths for variety.
And while the sun slowly hides from the horizon, why not take photos of the scenes around you as well. There are so many scenes you can capture with the golden light still on so take advantage of that opportunity.

Enjoy the experience of shooting at sunset. This is the best time of the day to relax but if you need to, grab the chance to capture the beautiful scenery and you’ll never forget the moment.

How To Apply Makeup For A Natural Look

If you're unhappy with how you look or just want a change but don't want people to know you're wearing make-up (or if you're not allowed, like at school), try these tips. Here you can read all about how to apply makeup so you look naturally beautiful.

Steps

  1.  Make sure your face is clean of any previous makeup. Put makeup remover or water on a cotton ball. Dab or rub in small circles to remove old makeup. Determine your skin type and cleanse, tone and moisturize with suitable products twice daily. If you have skin problems like spots/blackheads, exfoliate your skin
  2.  Moisturize. Using a small dab the size of a pea, gently rub in an unscented, oil free lotion. Scented lotions can aggravate skin and cause breakouts or an allergic reaction, and oily lotions will increase acne.
  3. Determine your right color of foundation. Get in a natural light and test the foundation to make sure it's the right color for your skin. Dab a few marks on your cheek and angle your face different ways to see if the color matches. Make sure to go underneath your jaw line—if you stop that edge of your face there will be a clear line where the foundation stops.
  •  Take your finger or a sponge dab in the foundation, and dab it on your face, blending it until it looks like your skin tone.
  •  If you have bags or discoloration under your eyes, take the cotton swab and make 3 dots on the line of the circles under your eyes. Take your ring finger and dab it in gently.
  • Tinted moisturizer is better for a more natural look, it blends in while evening out your skin tone. It commonly has SPF, and it moisturizes. Those with clearer skin will look best with this.
    4.  Use concealer on dark or red spots. Make sure this is the EXACT same color as your skin.   When you apply the concealer, do so directly on the spot and not around it. This is to avoid a halo effect and emphasis of the spot. Optionally set with beige powder. Be careful not to overdo it on the concealer—you only need enough to cover the spot.
    5. Use two shades of eyeshadow for a professional look. The colours you choose should be golds, browns or silvers, depending on your skin tone and colouring. Apply a light, neutral tone all over your lid and just above your crease, and use slightly darker to softly line the top lid and outline your crease. For a natural look, remember to blend the colours.
    6. * Alternatively, use lighter colours on the inner parts of your eyes and darker tones on the outside. Put white eyeshadow or eyeliner on the inside corner of your eyes to make them look wider and brighter.
    7. Line your eyes with a roasted-colored pencil liner. Pencil looks more natural than liquid or gel liner and it is easier to blend. Line two thirds of your top lashline and one third of your bottom lashline. Smudge the line with a cotton bud.
     8. Curl your eyelashes. This gives you a natural-looking lift without the use of mascara.
     9. Apply one coat of brown or soft black (for darker skin) mascara. If you are satisfied with your results in the previous step, you may skip this one.
    10.  Apply Bronzer. Bronzer is a great way to make it look like you have a natural glow. Lightly brush bronzer all over your face, or just along your cheekbones and T-Zone for a natural suntan appearance. However, bronzer can look silly on people with pale skin if you apply it incorrectly. Practice at home with bronzer to see if it looks good on you before going out with it on. If you don't like the way it looks, skip this step.
    11.  Apply Blush. If you were not happy with bronzer, you can apply blush instead. Creme blush generally works better than powder because it gives you a dewy look and lasts longer. Using a champagne-tinted creme blush, rub a little on your ring finger and blend onto your cheekbones.Note that you should not apply blush and bronzer—choose one.
    12.  Apply a neutral lip color. Avoid using chalky lipsticks or shiny lip glosses. Lip stain is generally best because it looks natural and lasts all day. Use a color that's close to your natural lip color.
